Earlier this month, The Wandering Hearts headed to their spiritual home of Nashville, Tennessee, where they played iconic venues including the Grand Ole Opry, opening for country music icon, Marty Stuart. As well as heading to Elvis‘ home, Graceland, and playing at the legendary Sun Studio, they also found time to write… Fingers crossed that album number 2 is with us next year.

But what did they listen to on their travels, I hear you yodel. The band keep their Spotify On The Road playlist updated regularly, and we asked AJ, Chess, Tara and Tim why they chose their most recent twelve tracks.

Natalie Hemby: Cairo, IL
We played this nearly every morning in Nashville! Natalie is an insanely good songwriter and this song is one of our faves. Maybe one day when we will get the opportunity to write with her but in the meantime, we are really happy listening! Chess

Chris Stapleton: Either Way
We had the absolute honour or playing on the same bill as Chris Stapleton at our debut US show at the Ryman. Chris was one of the artists that inspired us to start this band and this song is a perfect example of why. Amazing song and vocal performance. Tim

John Prine: In Spite of Ourselves
This was a real favourite on the trip, especially after watching he and Margo Price duet the song at the Ryman at Marty Stuart’s Late Night Jam. It was really funny! Tara

Marty Stuart And His Fabulous Superlatives: Old Mexico
We absolutely loved watching Marty And His Fabulous Superlatives perform Old Mexico when we toured the UK with them in 2017. The storytelling and the lovely way they blend and harmonise their voices was, and still is, inspirational. It was great to see them do it again on our US visit, a trip that wouldn’t have been possible if not for Marty. AJ

Cam: Diane
Diane was another anthem of our trip to Nashville! Just an all round great singalong song and such a clever response to Jolene. Chess

Striking Matches: Ghost
As long time fans of the duo, we were so excited to have had the opportunity to write with them in Nashville. Their musicianship is outstanding and is definitely on show here on Ghost! Tim

Ashley McBryde: Bible and a .44
This song was played a lot on the road and is universally adored by us, not only because of Ashley’s heartfelt vocals, but also owing to the craftsmanship of the writing, which is just stunning. Tara

Lukas Nelson and Promise Of The Real: Forget About Georgia
We got to see Lukas and his band play at C2C in London earlier this year and were mesmerised by his songs and performance. The story behind the song is absolutely heartrending and we can’t wait to hear him play it again over the summer. AJ

Kacey Musgraves: Butterflies
Her new album is amazing and makes us think of Nashville. This song in particular is beautiful. Chess

Counting Crows: Round Here
This song immediately takes us back to the 90s! It was written at a time when so many Americana rock bands were releasing great, accessible and commercially relevant songs. The album August & Everything After is a classic album packed full of wonderful writing. Tim

Mandolin Orange: Hey Stranger
There is so much space in this song, musically, which was perfect on long drives when you wanted to lose yourself in your own head. Add to that a really great catchy tune…we’re usually singing our way along a highway in no time! Tara

Riders In The Sky: That’s How The Yodel Was Born
I saw these chaps in chaps play at the Opry in 2016 and was so taken with their musicianship, style and humour – they made everyone feel great. Hard to believe that we would be playing on the same bill on the same stage with them two years later! AJ
