Who? Lake Street Dive

A bit about: Founded in Boston in 2004, now based in Brooklyn, and touring the world after two successful albums, Lake Street Dive are a four piece, multi-genre group who have toured Europe and Australia with over 100 shows. So how come you haven’t heard of them then? Because these guys aren’t your standard chart-topping hit factory, that’s why. Heavily and openly inspired by The Beatles (songs Hello? Goodbye! & Don’t Make Me Hold Your Hand are less than subtle nods to their heroes’ titles), Americana, 60s Soul, Jazz and Rock and Roll can all be heard, all with catchy, instinctive melodies that you’ll swear you’ve heard before. Popular with their growing base of listeners, and making more and more appearances on TV – including Jools Holland playing with Paul Simon – the band are up and (a long time) coming.

What to say: “They don’t sound like they’re from any particular decade – every song is different, but every song is cooooool.”

The maths: The Beatles (if they were American) + Amy Winehouse vocals + a trumpet

The releases: Both Bad Self Portraits & Side Pony are available to stream on Apple Music & Spotify (vinyl too if you’re feeling hipster), and new album Free Yourself Up comes out May 4th everywhere.

See them yourself: The band have announced only one UK date in their European tour this year, at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in October – tickets here.
