A bit about: Hailing from Bristol, Rothwell‘s the sort of pop act that isn’t ashamed to create catchy, upbeat tracks that comprise big beats behind well-produced synths, samples and vocal effects, while also remaining a hugely talented singer/songwriter. Her early work (early = 2016) was a much more organic output, but 2017 saw Rothwell plug in the electronics, with the end result the sort of thing you’d expect to hear if a big-ballad diva let Rudimental master her tracks just before release. Freedom, released in December, is a message of hope coated in chrome-like production, showcasing a coarse, powerhouse of a vocal and the ability to write a banger in equal measure, while Love Any Longer would have been a #1 if Paloma Faith had recorded it – you can just image the X Factor performance in the big dress with the sparks falling behind her. Now do the right thing and make sure it’s Rothwell doing that later this year.
What to say: You know how too often huge voices sing the sort of songs that send you to sleep? Not this one.
The maths: Adele + (Roisin Murphy x Jessie Ware)
The releases: There were four tracks (and remixes of said tracks) released last year, the majority of which are mentioned above. Hopefully 2018 will bring the release of a full-length album.
See them yourself: Currently just one tour date, supporting Louise at Scala next week. It’s sold out though, but if we’re holding out hope for the LP let’s assume there’ll be dates to support it too.
